The security of your account is very important to us. Whether you’re accessing it at work, at home or abroad, it’s important to make sure your personal information and devices are kept safe to avoid exposure to risk. Here are a few simple steps we recommend to help keep your account secure.

Protect your privacy and identity

It’s not uncommon to hear of stories of identity theft. Unfortunately it can happen to anyone, but our checklist below can help you minimise this risk.

If you think someone has access to your personal details, please contact us immediately.

Safeguard your personal computer

Your computer gives you the ability to trade online, so we want to make sure you are aware of the actions you can take to protect your computer against viruses and malware.

Here are some tips:

  • Enable automatic updates to ensure you always have the latest operating systems and software
  • Always download software from a reputable source

Safeguard your mobile phone

We know that your mobile phone carries a lot of personal information, so we want to help you protect it against things like ‘mobile phone porting fraud’. This is where someone transfers your phone number to another provider in an attempt to get hold of your details.

These are some things to look out for when it comes to ‘porting fraud’:

  • Your mobile service is suddenly disconnected
  • You’re notified of a change of provider without your permission
  • Your mobile has been stolen

If any of the above happens, please contact us as soon as possible.

You can also help protect your mobile by:

  • Using a password or fingerprint scanner
  • Keeping your operating system up to date
  • Using the latest version of the CommSec app
  • Disabling apps from any untrusted sources
  • Keeping hardware restrictions on your phone. Do not jailbreak (Apple) or root (Android) in order to install unapproved third party apps or features.

Keep an eye out for hoax e-mails

You probably receive numerous emails every day. Occasionally you may come across a hoax email, so we want to make sure you know how to recognise it to decrease your exposure to risk.

A hoax email may:

  • Invite you to visit fake websites
  • Be sent from an unfamiliar or peculiar address
  • Not include your name
  • Include misspelling and inconsistent images
  • Ask for sensitive information
  • Try to create a sense of urgency
  • Contain unfamiliar links or unexpected attachments

If you receive an email that looks like it’s from CommSec that you believe may be a hoax, make sure you don’t click on any links or provide personal details. Please forward the email as an attachment to hoax@cba.com.au
