Why do I need to complete a W-8 form?

The W-8 form is a legal document required by Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States that allows foreign investors to claim special tax treaty benefits, including a reduced rate of withholding tax. Each W-8 form is effective for 3 years, unless a change of circumstances requires a new form to be submitted.

Important note: If you do not have a valid W-8 form on file any payments (e.g. dividends and sale proceeds) credited to your International Share Trading account may be subject to a withholding of 30% under US tax law.
