How do I open an account to buy or sell international shares?

To buy or sell international shares through CommSec, you’ll need an International Trading Account.

If you're new to CommSec

Before applying for an International account, you will need to open a CommSec Share Trading account.

To open a CommSec Share Trading Account:

  1. Go to and select “Open an account”
  2. Follow the prompts to set up your trading account
  3. When you choose an account name, use the same name you’d like use for trading international shares
  4. Once your account is set up, you can go ahead and apply for an International Trading Account

How to apply for an International Trading Account

  1. Log in to your CommSec account and go to Portfolio
  2. Select Offers and Apply
  3. Select Applications in the left hand menu
  4. Click Apply Now next to “Add an International Account”
  5. Select the trading account you would like to link to your international account
  6. Follow the prompts to complete your application
  7. Please complete and sign your application form, then email it to

When will my International Trading Account be opened?

Individual accounts are generally opened within 1-2 business days from the time we receive your application. Other accounts are generally opened within 2-5 business days.
