How do I open an SMSF Trading Account and Cash Account with CommSec?

If you don’t have a CommSec Share Trading Account for your SMSF, you can choose one of the options below:

  • Opening a new trading account & CDIA
  • Opening a new trading account using an existing SMSF cash account (includes existing CDIA)
  • Opening a new SMSF cash account (CDIA) for an existing SMSF trading account

Opening a new trading account & CDIA

  1. Navigate to Portfolio > Offers & Apply > Application or click here
  2. Choose ‘Add a new Trading and Commonwealth Direct Investment Account (CDIA)’ and click ‘Apply Now
  3. Select 'SMSF' for ‘Which account type would you like to open'
  4. Complete your application and provide any required information to us.

Opening a new trading account using an existing SMSF cash account (includes existing CDIA)

  1. Navigate to Portfolio > Offers Apply > Application or click here
  2. Choose ‘Add a new trading account using your own cash account’ and click ‘Apply Now’
  3. Select 'SMSF' for ‘Which account type would you like to open'
  4. Complete your application and provide any required information to us.

Although you must chose the trade from $29.95 option, you will receive the lower brokerage rate for linking your existing CDIA account, when your trading account is set up.


Opening a new SMSF cash account (CDIA) for an existing SMSF trading account

  1. Navigate to Portfolio > Offers & Apply > Application or click here
  2. Choose ‘Add a Commonwealth Direct Investment Account (CDIA) for saving and/or trading’ and click ‘Apply Now’
  3. Select the SMSF trading account that will be linked to your CDIA account for settlement
  4. Complete your application and provide any required information to us

Please note:

  • Where you don’t have an existing SMSF share trading account with CommSec, you will be asked to open an account as an Individual Trustee or Company Trustee. Please ensure you choose the trustee type that is consistent with your most recent SMSF trust deed.
  • The ABN for your SMSF is mandatory for all SMSF applications.
  • Further instructions will be sent to you and other applicants to finalise the application.

Once finalised, we will endeavour to establish your account within 2 to 5 business days. You will be notified by email of your Client ID to access your new account.
