What to check before you transfer shares from the share registry

When you transfer shares from the share registry to your CommSec trading account, there are certain details that must match. If these details don’t match, we won’t be able to complete the transfer for you.

So if you're having trouble completing a transfer, here are some of the things you can check.

1 - Have you entered the right Securityholder Reference Number (SRN)?

The SRN you enter in your transfer request must match the SRN on your Issuer Holdings Statement (this is a letter the share registry will send you with your SRN listed).

Your SRN is a 10-12 digit number starting with the letter C or I. If you can’t find a holding statement, contact your share registry to ask for one. For assistance finding your SRN, search "SRN" or look for help under Related Support.

2 - Are the shares registered under the same name as your CommSec account?

The shares you want to transfer must be registered to the exact same name as the one on the CommSec account you’re transferring to. This includes the salutation, middle name, and spelling. For example, you could transfer shares from Mr David Smith to Mr David Smith, but not to Mr Dave Smith.

You can check your details by comparing the name on your Issuer Holding Statement to the name that’s recorded in your CommSec account. If you can’t find a holding statement, you can contact the share registry to ask for one. If the names are different, you’ll need to either update your details with the share registry, or update your details on your CommSec account.

3 - Are the shares registered under the same address?

The shares must be registered with the same postal address as the one on the CommSec account you’re transferring to.

If the addresses don’t match, you’ll need to either update your details with the share registry, or update your details on your CommSec account.

4 - Have you entered the correct number of units?

We won’t be able to process a transfer request unless you actually own the number of units that you’re trying to transfer. To find out how many units you own, check your latest Issuer Holding Statement, or contact the share registry.
